Earthworm survey - still alive and wriggling

With the weather slowly improving, it’s the perfect time to get back outside and take part in the soil and earthworm survey. We’ve had a fantastic response so far - more than 3,500 surveys have been submitted and over 7,000 worms identified.

We’d love to receive many more results this year from all over the country. In particular, there are still areas with very few results. Can you help us put dots on the map in Northumberland, Cumbria, Lincolnshire, Somerset, Wiltshire, Sussex and Norfolk?

The OPAL Soil team have been following up on some of your interesting results and findings. They recently surveyed a rural, grassland area and found eight different earthworm species in a single pit. The highest number so far.

However, your results show us that gardens are also a hotspot for earthworm biodiversity.

Why don’t you try different areas and see how many species you can find?

You can download full instructions and a simple earthworm identification guide from the page below.

Alternatively, email your details to opalsoil [at] imperial [dot] ac [dot] uk and we'll send you a survey pack.
